Utagawa Hiroshige

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist known for his serene, colorful landscapes. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), he trained in the Utagawa school and gained fame for woodblock print series like The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. His art captured seasonal beauty, everyday life, and atmospheric scenes, inspiring artists in Japan and abroad, including the European Impressionists.

Pieces by Hiroshige in the permanent collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields include Evening Shower on the Great Bridge and Atake (1857), The Sea at Satta in Suruga Province (1858), and Koshigaya in Musashi Province (1858), among others.
