    Alma Thomas

    Alma Thomas (American, 1891–1978) was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art. She debuted her distinctive, signature abstract work in 1966, at the age of 75. By the time of her death in 1978, Thomas had realized national recognition as a major artist.
