About the Artist:
Yannima Tommy Watson (c. 1935–2017) was a senior Pitjantjatjara artist from the Western Desert, known for his vibrant, abstract paintings that reflect his deep spiritual connection to his land and its Dreaming stories. Born in the desert country near Irrunytju, Watson lived a semi-nomadic childhood, learning traditional survival skills from his family. He began painting in his 60s at the Irrunytju Art Centre in 2001, and his powerful use of color and pattern quickly gained recognition, with his works featured in prominent collections including the National Gallery of Australia and Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. Watson’s paintings are an exploration of his country’s physical and spiritual essence, using color and shape to capture the dynamic, sacred landscape of his people.
