About the Artwork:

Kerry McCarthy's painting depicts Peron Islands, two islands located off the coast of her Country, Bulgul. These islands are easily accessible at low tide, when it is possible to walk across the shallow water. The islands are rich in wildlife, providing an abundance of food for the nearby communities.

Kerry remembers crossing the shallow waters with her grandfather as a child, gathering many different types of seafood together. He shared stories of his youth, including the time he was stationed on North Peron during World War II to keep watch for Japanese bombers during the bombing of Darwin.

About the Artist:

Kerry Madawyn McCarthy, born in 1975 at Daly River in the Northern Territory, is a Batjamal artist known for her finely detailed, vibrant paintings that explore life, culture, and Country in the Top End. Her work is deeply inspired by the natural environment around Bulgul, her mother’s ancestral land, and often reflects stories shared by her grandfather. Kerry began painting in 1994 and developed her distinctive style while studying at the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education. Her compositions combine traditional themes with contemporary techniques, offering an expressive and thoughtful interpretation of the patterns, textures, and spiritual connections found across her Country.
