Muthabaringga Cotton Scarf

$ 30.00

This organic cotton scarf features artwork by Cedric Varcoe, depicting Muthabaringga—a sacred ceremonial ground in the Hindmarsh Valley Dreaming. In Ramindjeri Ngarrindjeri culture, Muthabaringga was formed by the dancing feet of ancestors during a ceremonial event, where the whale man was speared. As they danced, the landscape—steep hills, valleys, and ponds—was created, and fire was gifted to the people for warmth, cooking, and light. The valley remains a significant gathering place for both the Ramindjeri Ngarrindjeri people and visitors, where ceremonies continue to be performed. Soft, breathable, and made from organic cotton, this scarf beautifully connects you with cultural heritage and tradition.

About the Artist:

Cedric Varcoe is a Narangga-Ramindjeri and Ngarrindjeri contemporary artist whose work is deeply connected to the lands, waters, and creation stories of his people. Born in Adelaide in 1984, Cedric began painting at the age of eight, inspired by his family’s stories and the landscapes of his homeland along the River Murray, Coorong, and South Coast. His art reflects his role as a cultural custodian, sharing the Dreaming stories, significant sites, and totems of his people. With a passion for passing down knowledge and connecting younger generations to their heritage, Cedric’s work is held in collections across Australia and internationally. He has also contributed to community arts projects and murals, fostering creative expression and cultural pride.
