About the Artist:

Michelle Possum Nungurrayi, born in 1970 at Mt. Allan in the Northern Territory, is a talented Anmatyerre artist and the younger daughter of Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, one of the founding figures of the contemporary Indigenous art movement. Michelle’s art is deeply influenced by her father’s teachings, as well as her connection to her homeland and its sacred stories. Her works, which often feature aerial maps of her Country, reflect the Dreamings and ceremonial stories of her community, including Seven Sisters Dreaming, Bush Tucker stories, and Grandmother’s Country. Known for her complex, interwoven designs and vibrant use of color, Michelle’s paintings depict not only the landscapes of her home but also the people, with men and women engaging in traditional activities. She began painting in the mid-1980s and exhibited her works alongside her father and sister Gabriella in the 1987 family group show in Brisbane. Today, Michelle continues to create in Melbourne, where she lives with her family, often painting alongside her sister Gabriella.
